IndyCar racers using Chevrolet engines will have a slightly different look this year. Chevrolet this week revealed a new design for the aerodynamic bodywork on 2015 Verizon IndyCar series racing cars. The new components are said to provide "greater aerodynamic performance."

Compared to the 2014 aerodynamic package that Chevrolet offered for last year's IndyCar racers, which are based on a Dallara DW12 chassis, the 2015 version has a redesigned front wing, new "wheel wedges" to deflect air around the rear tires, a more compact engine cover and side pods, larger rear bumper pods, and a new multi-level rear wing with redesigned end plates.

"This new aero kit provides Chevrolet drivers the capability to enter and exit corners faster, while maintaining high speeds on the straights," Chevrolet IndyCar program manager Chris Berube said in a statement. "We took a clean-sheet approach to the aero kit, delivering an optimized and efficient design that should really give our Chevrolet teams an edge."

The Chevrolet IndyCar bodywork shown here is for road course or short oval tracks, while a different design for high-speed ovals will be revealed in May. The 2015 Chevrolet IndyCar racers, in road-course configuration, will start the 2015 season competing at the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on March 29.

Chevrolet returned to IndyCar racing as an engine supplier for the 2012 season, and builds twin-turbocharged V-6 engines for the race series. In 2012, Chevrolet was also instrumental in helping bring an IndyCar race back to Detroit's Belle Isle. In 2014, Chevrolet took the IndyCar manufacturer's title for the third straight year.
