The 2016 Tesla Model X won't be officially revealed to the public until an event in California this evening, but the all-electric crossover's energy-efficiency ratings have already been announced. The standard 2016 Tesla Model X 90D will return 92 mpge combined and have a driving range of 257 miles, while the more powerful P90D model will average 89 mpge and boast a driving range of 250 miles. Both the cars have a 90-kWh battery pack.
Likely owing to the Model X's greater weight and drag, those figures fall behind what an equivalent Model S sedan manages in EPA testing. The Model S 90D is rated at 100 mpge and a 270-mile driving range, while the Model S P90D is rated for 93 mpge and 253 miles per charge.
After numerous delays in its development and production, the first copies of the 2016 Tesla Model X will be handed over to customers today at the company's factory in Fremont, California. With the same dual-motor design and lithium-ion battery technology as the company's Model S sedan, the Model X looks to give Tesla fans an opportunity to buy a more practical vehicle. As several spy videos have revealed, the production model keeps the wild "Falcon Wing" door design that facilitates easier access to the rear seats, while the front doors are traditionally hinged designs.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said that pricing for the Model X will run about $5,000 more than an equivalent Model S sedan. A leaked online configurator shared with customers who had pre-ordered the model revealed that the fully loaded 2016 Tesla Model X Signature would start at $133,200 after destination charges and before any tax breaks. As on the Model S sedan, there's a "Ludicrous Speed" option that improves acceleration; it costs $10,000 on the Model X Signature. The site also revealed that the car's front motor is rated for 259 hp, its rear motor is rated for 503 hp, and that the car will reach 60 mph in 3.8 seconds and can manage a top speed of 155 mph.
