Volvo today revealed the 2017 S90, a new luxury sedan that follows the XC90 in the brand's wave of new models. Based on the same SPA flexible platform as the XC90, the 2017 Volvo S90 wears many of the crossover's handsome styling cues.

As spy photos, leaked scale models, and teaser photos indicated, the 2017 Volvo S90 has the long-hood proportions of traditional luxury sedans. Out front is the company's chrome mesh grille, with T-shaped "Thor's hammer" headlights and elegant hood strakes. There's a pronounced shoulder line running the entire length of the car, while large bracket-shaped taillights adorn the trunk. Despite its somewhat conventional three-box silhouette, the 2017 Volvo S90 is a fresh and modern design, with a gracefully curved roofline and a tapered nose.

Within the cabin, driver and passengers will be treated to the same high-end leather, wood, and metal trim from the 2016 Volvo XC90. As in that car, Volvo has dispensed with most of the S90's buttons, replacing them with virtual controls on the giant Sensus Connect touchscreen infotainment system at the center of the dashboard. Fully digital instruments greet the driver, along with an ornate engine stop-start switch and drive-mode selector dial in the center console.

Under the hood, the 2017 Volvo XC90 will launch with a 2.0-liter turbo- and supercharged T6 inline-four engine (which makes 315 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque in the XC90), as well as the company's T5 turbo-four engine and the XC90's T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain. The car will also offer "world-first" active-safety and semi-autonomous driving technologies, Volvo says.

After the 2017 Volvo S90 hits global markets next year, Volvo will also introduce a station wagon version called the V90. As a scale model revealed, the Volvo V90 will likely keep much of the styling of the S90 sedan, but with a longer and taller roofline that provides significantly more practicality. Expect the production model to resemble the Volvo Concept Estate shown at the 2014 Geneva auto show.

The 2017 Volvo S90 will make its public debut in January at the 2016 Detroit auto show.
