Mercedes-AMG unveiled its newest factory race car, set to take on all challengers in the highly competitive GT3-class. Based on the sumptuous Mercedes-AMG GT road car, the Mercedes-AMG GT3 is a step toward diversifying Mercedes' motorsports presence.
While its predecessor, the SLS AMG GT3, was based on the primarily grand touring-focused SLS AMG, the AMG GT3 is a lithe evolution of the already-sharp AMG GT sports car. However, while the street-going AMG GT utilizes a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8, the AMG GT3 finds its go-fast from the track-tested 6.2-liter V-8 from the bygone SLS AMG GT3. No official word on power outputs, but the 6.2-liter V-8 pumped out 548 hp in its previous applications. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a beefy six-speed sequential transaxle, ideal for improved weight distribution.
Aerodynamics have been greatly improved as well, with the inclusion of a large rear wing, along with integrated aerodynamic body skirts all around the lower sections of the car, with integrated ducts and inlets peppering the exterior. Inside, the AMG GT3 loses superfluous weight, stripping away things like cup holders and the passenger's seat. A roll cage is installed, along with extensive replacement of interior, body panels, and other design components with carbon fiber facsimiles.
The Mercedes-AMG GT3 is set to make its official debut at the upcoming 2015 Geneva auto show. In the meantime, check out photos of the aggressive new track weapon in the gallery below.
