Volvo is hitting the racetrack with a new Volvo S60 Polestar race car that will compete in the 2016 season of the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC). Developed in partnership with Cyan Racing (previously called Polestar Racing), the S60 racer is the start of a multi-year partnership for this racing series.

Under the hood of the Volvo S60 is a turbocharged four-cylinder that's supposedly based on the company's Drive-E four-cylinder used in production cars. Output rises to 400 hp, and all sorts of other modifications, like an aggressive aerodynamic body kit and a racing suspension and brakes, turn the car into a mean-looking track monster. Volvo is showing the car both in its sinister-looking black trim and in classic Polestar Blue livery, though the racers themselves will wear all sorts of other liveries when the season starts up next year. The Polestar S60 is set to compete in three series in 2016: the FIA World Touring Car Championship, the V8 Supercars series in Australia, and the 2016 Scandinavian Touring Car Championship.

Cyan Racing, the team behind the development of the S60 racer, is the motorsports division of Polestar. Volvo acquired Polestar as its official performance brand earlier this year, though Cyan Racing remains an independent operation.
