Mazda Company Overview
The company that is now known as Mazda Motor Corp. was founded in 1920. Called the Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., Ltd., it would change its name in 1984.
Originally, Toyo focused on the manufacturing of tools. It would later switch to the production of cars: its first vehicle, the three-wheeler Mazda-Go, debuted in 1931.
The R360 coupe, which debuted in 1960, was the company's first true car. Mazda also debuted the B-Series 1500, its first pickup, shortly afterwards as well as the Cosmo, one of the world's first rotary-powered cars. In 1979, Ford Motor Co. took a 25 percent stake in the company. The extra cash helped Mazda to compete worldwide against Japanese rivals Toyota, Honda, and Nissan. Bolster by sales of its new 323 and 626 sedans, the automaker entered the '90s with the debut of its most well-known car, the Mazda Miata (now known as the MX-5).
Financial problems during that decade forced Mazda to shelve plans to start its own luxury brand. In 1996, Ford obtained 33.4 percent shares in the automaker. Again, the cash reinvigorated the automaker as it debuted a string of vehicles: the (now discontinued) MPV minivan in 2000; Ford-based Mazda Tribute SUV; the Mazda6 sedan; and the immensely popular Mazda3 compact. The brand's first all-new rotary-powered car, the RX-8, went on sale in 2003 as a 2004 model.
Today, Mazda continues with its string of success. Besides a refreshed MX-5, the brand unveiled its all-new CX-7 crossover last year. This year, an even larger version, the CX-9, went on sale. Future vehicles include a hardtop version of the MX-5 as well as hybrids.
