Because even the 523-hp X7 M50i won't be exclusive or powerful enough for some, Alpina has already started testing its own version of BMW's biggest-ever SUV. That's right, the X7 will likely be one of Alpina's next models, company CEO Andreas Bovensiepen tells us. When we drove the X7, we were impressed by its acceleration with both launch engines—even the 335-hp turbocharged inline-six.

The 2020 X7 M50i is more powerful and heavier still, with a 523-hp 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 and a BMW-estimated zero-to-60 time of just 4.5 seconds. As for the BMW Alpina XB7 (the hot SUV's likely name), it could have as much as 600 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, potentially matching the 2020 Alpina B7 and its twin-turbo V-8. Engineering a tall three-row crossover isn't the same as working on a large luxury sedan with a lower center of gravity, however, so we'll have to wait to learn more on the next potential Alpina model for the U.S.

As with all Alpina products, count on its version of the X7 to be fully overhauled from interior and suspension to steering and those gorgeous Alpina wheels. A top speed above the 2020 X7 M50i's 155-mph limit is also possible. Above all else, though, expect an Alpina XB7 to be a comfortable daily driver that just happens to offer insanely high performance for an enormous SUV.

Alpina already produces the diesel-powered XD3 and XD4 for other markets, so an XB7 won't be the automaker's first SUV, but it could be its most successful. Bovensiepen also points out that an Alpina version of the gorgeous 8 Series Gran Coupe is also on the automaker's agenda, so fans of the brand seeking something a little sleeker than an X7 or 7 Series should soon have a sexy alternative.
