The Scout Olympic Could Be All The Camper You’ll Ever Need
Ditch your house and "pickup" something a little more mobile.
It's easy to romanticize the idea ofliving out on the road, with nowhere to go, no timeline for getting there, and nothing to worry about. But practically speaking, that's a pretty tough sell. However, camping and living in your truck bed might be a suitable alternative to a life on the road 100 percent of the time. Cue the Scout Olympic. Billed as a camper for "minimalist travelers" and "weekend warriors," it might just be the perfect way to get the heck out of dodge—potentially using your Dodge, or Ram, or Toyota, or Ford. You get the picture.
The Olympic is Scout's first camper ever, but it seems like the company has done its homework. The slide-in camper is designed to fit in most full-size pickup beds. It has an aluminum frame with a composite body—both of those materials are light, and that's good, because there's a ton of standard kit that comes with it, and the less weight you perch up high in your truck's bed, the better for handling.
For just $19,980 (bear with us) you get the Olympic, plus a 160W Renergy monocrystalline solar panel; a swing-out dinner table that seats up to four; two power outlets; and smoke, gas, and carbon monoxide detectors. The list of optional extras includes a fridge and freezer, a locker for your valuables (bears are nosey creatures, too, so a lockable box might come in handy), a portable cooktop, and a pop-up roof tent with a hatch for easy access. There's even available WiFi—even though unplugging from the world is the entire point of a camper, it's a nicety some will appreciate.
The Olympic camper weighs in at 1,133 pounds in standard form, but the options can add to that quickly, so you're going to need a truck with at least one ton of payload capacity to be on the safe side. It's also just under 71 inches long and 47 inches wide, so your truck should have a six-foot bed for safe hauling. Interested parties can place a pre-order on Scout's site right now. You're just a mere 20 grand away from freedom, people (provided, you know, you already have a truck to whisk yourself and the camper to that faraway place in).
